Intro To the Motorola Atrix

The Motorola Artix is a new phone – it’s been available in the US for a while but only just been released in the UK – that gives us a view of what things are going to be like in the future i.e. how the line between phones and computers is going to merge.

Some of the best things about the Atrix include that it has a good battery life, decent camera, an HD Dock that means it’s a decent computer and a lap dock. It also has a high resolution screen – something that’s essential for a modern smart phone. The power of the Atrix is probably its most impressive feature – it’s easy to see that in a few years we’re going to have phones that are almost laptops.

Although the future is bound to merge the line between computers and mobiles we’re not quite there yet, even though the Motorola Atrix comes pretty close. There are problems with it, including that it doesn’t come with Gingerbread at the moment and accessories for it are relatively expensive. The computer part of the phone won’t work if you don’t have the mobile docked which is another downside, and the back of the phone is quite slippy making it easy to drop. Overall though the Atrix is a good phone and definitely one for tech nuts to try out. It’s a good glimpse of what we can see in the future.

Nokia E6 Preview

A phone that I’m looking forward to is the Nokia E6, which is schedule to be released during the second quarter of this year according to various websites. It is a business phone that’s obviously meant for messaging – the QWERTY keyboard is a giveaway – and has a stylish design.

What really interests me is the display. According to previews, it is a 2.46” compact display with an extremely sharp touchscreen. Although the screen itself is small, it’ll be interesting to see just how precise the touch capabilities are and whether it can keep up with similar smart phones in this respect.

A bonus of the Nokia E6 is that it integrates with certain Microsoft tools such as Sharepoint and Exchange. It also has support for VPN amongst other things. The operating system is the newest Symbian.

Other features of the phone include an 8MP camera, ability to record videos at up to 720p and an FM radio. As we’ve come to expect from a modern smart phone, it has a variety of connectivity options including 3.5G and can download at over 10Mbps.

The problem I see with the phone is that it’s trying very hard to be a BlackBerry when it obviously isn’t. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – and I can certainly see lots of business people using the E6 – but it would be nice to see a phone company take a different route rather than just copying other designs. Still, it’s an interesting phone that might have some admirers when it’s released.

The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300

BlackBerry have just released the latest version of the popular BlackBerry curve series. The curve single handedly opened up BlackBerry phones to the teen market who found them useful for text messaging, email and social networking.

This was a new market for RIM who had previously sold mainly to business customers. The significant factor in the BlackBerry Curves success in the domestic and teen market was of course its price.

It is around half the price of the BlackBerry bold 9700 making it far more affordable both as a contract or pre paid phone.

So, it is a little surprising that the BlackBerry Curve 9300 crept onto the scene so quietly. I guess that is perhaps because there is not an awful lot to shout about! The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is almost identical to the Curve 8520. It has the same case, and pretty well the same keyboard, bar some slight changes to the moulding on the outer keys.

But, the BIG difference with this phone is the addtion of 3G support. Give the market for the Curve, it is surprising that it was ever released with only GPRS Edge connectivity. That should never have been! It is painfully slow to use both social networking applications and the web browser.

So, the new Curve 3G 9300 should improve significantly the every day experience of its users. Furthermore it uses BlackBerry RIM’s latest operating system, OS6 which is a lot smoother, and again enhances the experience when using social apps.

The WiFi range has been extended through the use if WiFi N, another enhancement that will speed use of online applications.

So all in all, this is pretty much an 8520 revamped for internet / online usage. The power of that is not to be underestimated in this day and age, and certainly not with a younger market. Since going on sale a few weeks ago, the 9300 is already a top seller, and shows no sign of slowing down!
